VE-CONTEMP
ART

JOSÉ VÍVENES

He graduated with honors in Fine Art from the Armando Reverón Fine Arts University Institute before carrying out a Diploma in Western Art at the Metropolitan University in Caracas, which he finished in 2009. His work involves both painting and sculpture and is highly tactile in nature.
In the gestural essence of his strokes, Vivenes opens up the possibility of reconsidering the bonds and affections that define us as human beings. Simultaneously, his artistic practice becomes self-reflexive as he contemplates the conditions and possibilities inherent in painting through the pictorial medium itself as a form of knowledge that not only documents history, but also actively participates in its continuous reinterpretation and reconstruction.

Vivenes’ work stands as a testimony not only to external reality, but also to painting’s capacity to explore the complexity of the human condition and the dynamic nature of history. By exemplo, in the context of the geography known as Latin America, the artist seeks to highlight the diverse conditions of cultural syncretism. His focus is not on the tension between coloniser and colonised, but rather on considering this space as a field of cultural richness. This phenomenon is not unique, as it has existed at other times and in other places. The artist, with an ironic and arcane reflective gaze, is interested in highlighting these contrasts from another perspective, underlining the complexity and cultural diversity that characterise our geographies.
